The new season of the Tewkesbury Sunday Social Netball League got underway at Tewkesbury Sports Centre, with teams returning to the court for the opening round of fixtures. After the off-season break, players were eager to get back into competitive action, and the first week provided an encouraging start to the campaign.
With teams looking to build momentum early in the season, the evening featured two competitive matches and plenty of positive performances as players settled back into league netball.
Dancing Queens 16–12 Voulez-Vous
The opening match of the season saw Dancing Queens take on Voulez-Vous in an entertaining contest.
Both teams started brightly and produced some good passages of play throughout the game. Dancing Queens were able to establish a lead through effective movement and consistent shooting, while Voulez-Vous continued to apply pressure and remained within touching distance for much of the match.
As the game progressed, Dancing Queens maintained their advantage and finished with a 16–12 victory. Voulez-Vous showed plenty of promise in their opening fixture and will be encouraged by several strong passages of play as they look ahead to the coming weeks.
Gimme! The Ball 14–8 Super Troupers
The second fixture of the evening saw Gimme! The Ball face Super Troupers, with Gimme! The Ball securing a 14–8 win.
The game was competitive throughout, with both teams working hard in attack and defence. Gimme! The Ball managed to create scoring opportunities consistently and converted enough chances to build a useful advantage during the middle stages of the match.
Super Troupers continued to battle throughout the contest and showed good determination, particularly in defence, but Gimme! The Ball maintained control to record their first win of the season.
Congratulations to Abi Overthrow from Winner Takes It All, who was named Week 1's Most Valued Player.
Although her team was not in action during the evening's fixtures, Abi's contribution during the opening week stood out. Her movement around the court, work rate and positive attitude earned recognition from across the league and made her a worthy recipient of the first MVP award of the season.
The opening week provided a solid start to the new campaign, with teams showing plenty of enthusiasm as they returned to competitive netball. Early-season matches often provide an opportunity for teams to settle into their combinations and identify areas for improvement, and Week 1 offered a number of positive performances to build upon.
Dancing Queens and Gimme! The Ball both started their seasons with victories, while the remaining teams will be looking to bounce back quickly and register their first points in the coming weeks.
With the first results now recorded, attention turns to Week 2 as teams continue their campaigns and look to build momentum in the early stages of the season.
